1 - South Gate
South Gate is a subdivision of approximately 2,150 homes in Sarasota that was started in 1955. Many different builders contributed to the success of building this community on what was previously an orange grove. Most homes are one story ranch style homes and were built with concrete block construction at a high elevation. Some of the best craftsmen of the day installed custom tile work, terrazzo floors and plaster walls.
Many of these homes have been updated in recent years while others have retained the Mid Century Modern design style. Prices range from the low $200's up to $500,000. The median sale price in 2019 was $285,000 making South Gate an affordable option for working families, retirees and snowbirds.
The location is highly desired because of the close proximity to Downtown Sarasota, Siesta Key Beach, shopping, schools, restaurants and Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Award winning Siesta Key Beach is a 15 minute drive from South Gate and Downtown Sarasota including the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center is less than a 10 minute drive away.
The Community Association owns five acres on Phillippi Creek and includes a large swimming pool and an historic Community Center designed by famed “Sarasota School” Architect, Victor Lundy. The Community Center features floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking tranquil Phillippi Creek.
The optional $75 annual dues for a social membership to the Community Association are very reasonable. Pool memberships are also optional and are available for an additional $150 per year.
